Penny Pines

The National Garden Club and the USDA Forest Service have formed a partnership sustaining our national and urban forests through the Penny Pines program. Penny Pines is a national conservation project for reforestation, funded both by donations and federal funds. Since it’s inception in 1941, the donations to the Penny Pines project have, with the Forest Service, planted over 68 million trees. The donations are used by the Forest Service, along with additional Federal funds, to plant, or replant, areas that have been damaged or need forestation. And our contributions can be directed specifically to Mississippi, so the reforestation helps our own damaged areas and forests, as well as our economy.

The Penny Pines areas that are planted and supported by the Forest Service may be planted, not just with pines, but also with trees and plants indigenous to the specific area. The results are not only beauty, but all the benefits our forests bring to our environment, such as soil and watershed protection, soil stabilization, timber growth, and improved habitat.

The Penny Pines contributions are submitted in amounts of $68, or increments of $68, and, if you like, they can be made “In honor of . . . ” or “In memory of . . . ” individuals, themes, etc.

The donations we collect for the Penny Pines program are sent to our state Treasurer, Debby Cooper, and she will send in the donations in $68 increments to the national Penny Pines program. Those funds are used, along with federal funds, for reforestation by the USDA Forest Service.

Your donations to Penny Pines will help reforest Mississippi damaged areas, and support our state environment.

Thank you!
