Lanoux Youth Nature Day Camp

Now is the time to start planning what Lanoux Youth Nature Day Camp your club wants to do for this summer.

Any garden club in Mississippi is welcome to host a Youth Nature Day Camp.  The host club usually has the event for one day.  The host club decides when to have the camp (usually during the summer).  Once the club decides on a date, then a sheltered place outside should be reserved.  Bathrooms should also be handy.  Children should range in age from 5-12 years-old, keeping in mind that kids of various ages in one setting may not work; for example, if a club has 15 children and eight of those are 11-12 years old, they will not mix as well with five year-olds.  Limit the number of children to an amount the garden club can work with.  Do not have a Lanoux Youth Nature Day Camp and have 50 children and only five adults to work with that many children. The host club decides on the program for the day.

Workshop ideas can be about anything nature wise:   growing flowers or vegetables, recognizing birds or other animals, creating floral designs, arts & crafts to create something, identifying trees, collecting leaves, butterfly information, and the list goes on.  Many books can be used to create lots of ideas and projects to keep students engaged and active for one day. The Frightened Frog and The Saved Seed are two examples.

Each host club will receive $300.00 to help with any expenses. Once a garden club has decided to have a camp, please contact Allison Ashmore | flowersquaw@yahoo.com | (662) 417-0612 | 2741 Sweethome Road, Grenada, MS 38901.  She will see that a check is sent to the garden club.  She can also help with having students create a nature banner or any other workshop idea or ideas. Allison Ashmore also has more ideas or suggestions for young people.  They are our future.

To make a club donation by the March 1 deadline, please contact Allison as well.
